Recording of the May 20, 2026 AFS Community Connections Workshop - All Good Things in Forum Moderation: Highlighting best practices for current and future moderators
Co-Facilitated by Bob Halperin and Melissa Weiksnar, MBA 1982 classmates
What separates a good forum from a truly transformative one? In this highly interactive session, we’ll explore practical, experience-tested approaches to moderating with intention—from creating a space that is both safe and brave, to modeling vulnerability and inviting deeper sharing. We’ll introduce icebreakers and exercises you can use at future meetings, practice using some of these new approaches, and discuss how curiosity and experimentation can elevate your forum experience.
Bob Halperin is the co-founder of HBS alumni forums and a YPO-certified forum facilitator. He was a member for 14 years of the first HBS forum in Boston and launched the first HBS forum in Pittsburgh after moving there a year ago. Bob also serves as Pittsburgh chair for the Change Agent Leaders Organization (CALO) under whose auspices he facilitates YPO-style forums for CEOs of leading nonprofits in the region.
Melissa Weiksnar has been a member of Boston Forum 11 since 2012, started moderating in 2017, and welcomed her successor in January. She has experienced Forum as a "creative crucible," continuously innovating with formats and exercises (including "flipped updates"). She participates in the HBSAB Forum Council, and her section B monthly Zooms (73 consecutive and counting). Based in Buffalo, NY, since 2016, she is also active with the local HBS Club and recently led their digital infrastructure and social media projects. She is collaborating with Forum leader Gary Antonick on AI-based Forum resources, including the ChatGPT Forum Sage chatbot.
